MAY 28 - We flew 2 hours from Urumqi, on the north
edge of the Taklamakan Desert, to Kashgar, on the western edge.
The view from the plane was fascinating; it looked like illustrations
from a geology textbook. Note where a stream has cut through
the mountains just under the just engine.
Arriving at the Kashgar airport. Notice that there's
Uygur script but no Chinese.
Stop looking at the billboard and notice the mountains
in the background. The mountains to the west catch the moisture,
resulting in a hot, dry climate.
On the way out of Kashgar, motor vehicle traffic transitioned
to 3-wheeled motor carts and eventually donkey carts as the primary
means of transportation.
